This study analyzes household spending changes in the immediate years following retirement. By tracking the spending of a fixed group of households before and after retirement, study results show surprising fluctuations in how and when households spend.

Sudipto Banerjee, Ph.D., Research Associate, Employee Benefit Research Institute (EBRI)

Sudipto Banerjee joined EBRI in 2011, focusing his research on economic aspects of retirement and documenting the expenditure patterns of elderly Americans. He has done research on Financial Literacy, identifying geographical patterns in Financial Literacy and Financial Behavior.

Dr. Banerjee has testified to the ERISA Advisory Council at the Department of Labor for the hearing on Lifetime Participation in Plans. His work has been cited in media publications such as The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, among others. He has written guest columns for PBS and Huffington Post, and his research has been published in academic and industry journals.

In 2015, Dr. Banerjee was honored as one of the 50 Most Influential People in Aging by Next Avenue, a PBS website dedicated to older Americans.
